Welcome to TESCOS

Who are we?

The English Speaking Club of Schaffhausen (TESCOS) was founded in 1973 as a non-profit-making social club where people of all ages and nationalities can get together to enjoy speaking English. The Club is interested in meeting people from the Schaffhausen area, people from various countries, cultures and of all ages. For this purpose we organise a range of monthly events and activities. At present the Club has members from 10 different countries. Club activities are coordinated by a committee which is broadly supported by club members.

One of the most social activities enjoyed all over the world is eating so, as can be seen in our Club Calendar, past and future, many events involve culinary pursuits either as the main or lesser aspect of the reason for getting together. One wag even suggested we change the name to “The English Eating Club of Schaffhausen”, which certainly has its merits, but doesn`t quite cover all of our interests.

Knowledge of English required?

To enjoy the club it helps if you can communicate in English, not perfectly, but sufficiently that you can interact, possibly improving your knowledge and ability into the bargain. No matter what level you`ve reached, the Club will make you feel welcome. We have no barriers to gender, age, race, colour, social standing, religion etc. And if you have a handicap of some kind, you`re sure to find a willing hand to help you get to events. Being “different” is what makes people all the more interesting.

Open to new ideas!

The club has a long history of celebrating good company, but is not stuck in the past. New people bring new ideas, so as well as many traditional events, we like to test new ways of doing things. One of these is our “Join-In” events, where members are invited to announce something they would like to do, even at short notice, but would enjoy it more in the company of any member(s) who would like to join them e.g. attending a concert, watching a film, cycling somewhere etc. After all “a joy shared is a joy doubled“. Casual TGIFFs (Thank Goodness It`s First Friday for the uninitiated) are another type of event at which members and non-members are invited to get together for a drink, snack or meal on the first Friday of each month – see the “Upcoming Events” section. Also, as we are non-profit-making, all of the membership fees are returned to members by subsidising some of the events.

Interested? Then please don`t hesitate to contact us or use the application form shown on this site. If you are just curious, but undecided, then you are welcome to join us as a non-member a few times before deciding to join. The annual fee is CHF 45.- pp or CHF 60.- per couple or family. If you`d like some more information, just contact one of the Committee shown on the next page.

Good News

Hi folks, I always encourage members to share their experiences and am happy to be able to do just that. If you are interested, take a look under “Things to share” – and maybe write something you think the rest of us may find interesting. Cheers, Alex
